HP Elite Dragonfly G3 Review

The HP Elite Dragonfly G3 is a perfect business laptop. This laptop has great speakers, a 5 MP front camera, a nice keyboard and trackpad, and a huge 3:2 display. Optional 5G increases mobility. I've had many laptops, but a few stand out. Some are HP EliteBooks, Lenovo ThinkPads, and Surface Pros/Laptop Studios.

A button and LED disable your microphone. If the privacy shutter is always on, face recognition or the fingerprint reader can log into Windows. HP Wolf Security enhances software and web browsing malware security.

The Elite Dragonfly G3's keyboard and touchpad are also my favorites. I didn't get fatigued typing on HP's EliteBooks' softer keyboards. It's one of those keyboards that's weird at first but becomes familiar. Despite lacking haptic feedback, the huge touchpad is precise, smooth, and has a pleasing gentle click. The trackpad's light-catching chrome chamfer is amazing.

Four B&O-tuned speakers with amplifiers generate rich sound. Two are on top and two on the bottom, where the laptop softly curves to offer clearance. The Audio Playbook Tools application with 10-band equalization and HP Dynamic Audio (auto, music, movie, or voice) lets you tailor these excellent speakers. Intel's 4G/5G modem worked flawlessly.

This laptop supports all networks with a SIM card. No SIM card, traveling. Israel used eSIM. It's amazing to hop off the plane and have my laptop instantly connected to 4G data, letting me work anywhere on the Intel trip. No reception or performance issues. HP deserves credit for not requiring a SIM tool. Instead, you press in to eject the SIM tray, add the SIM, then replace it on the left side.

The Dragonfly slightly outperforms the competition in our benchmarks, but its performance exceeds its CPU speed: The sum matters. The Intel 12th Generation Core i7-10 1265U's cores make it fast and snappy, even though it's not my fastest processor. I had no trouble with Adobe Photoshop Elements or other "information worker" tasks like email, browser usage, Microsoft Office, Slack, etc.

The i7's cooling and fan are quieter at lower speeds. Despite constant use, the laptop stayed cool. The 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD is one of my fastest drives, reading 6,863 MB/s and writing 4,480 MB/s. Toss's LPDDR5 RAM and PCMark 10 score match the Dell XPS 13 Plus (which measures overall system performance). Dell's premium laptop uses a much stronger Core i7-1280P processor.

The battery lasts 7–8 hours after a few months. Intel's 12th-generation mobile processors perform well, but they have poor battery life. HP wisely chose a U-series chip over the power-hungry P-series. I said this laptop has HPD, Tile, and HP QuickDrop. HPD can lock the Elite Dragonfly G3 after 30 seconds of inactivity.
