HP ZBook Studio G7 Review

The HP ZBook Studio G7 and ZBook Create G7 are easily confused. Both include a sleek, 17.9-mm-thin aluminum chassis, an identical port and keyboard configuration, outstanding Bang & Olufsen speakers, and a 15.6-inch screen with an 87% screen-to-body ratio. That is the end of the similarities. The Create G7 is a 4.23-pound mobile workstation designed for professional creatives, while the 3.8-pound laptop is intended for business creatives, according to HP.

The ZBook Studio G7 can handle any task, including intensive video and photo editing, music composition, and gaming. This laptop's battery life, durability, and external speakers contribute to its versatility. The HP ZBook Studio G7 is worth a look if you're searching for a mobile workstation that combines excellent performance with a durable chassis composed of lightweight materials.

There are three possible Studio G7 variants. The base model carries a 4-core Intel Core i5 processor, 16GB RAM, an Nvidia Quadro T1000 graphics card, and a 256GB NVMe SSD for $1,869 (£TK, AU$TK). The $2,464 top-tier option has a 6-core Intel i7 processor, a 4K anti-glare display, and double the storage space.

A configuration priced at $3,758.64 will soon be available for online purchase through HP. Users will receive a 6-core 2.71 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, an Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 with 6GB of VRAM and 32GB of RAM, a 15.6-inch FHD display, and a 1TB NVMe SSD for storage. The Studio G7, regardless of configuration, is a substantially less expensive alternative to the Create G7.

HP has taken the change seriously enough to replace the normal HP logo on the top cover with a sleek Z in a font reminiscent of the Power Rangers. The reflective material pairs beautifully with the aluminum unibody chassis of the Z. The Studio G7 feels fantastic in our hands out of the box, and its footprint is 22% smaller than the previous ZBook.

The Studio G7 almost seems like an ultrabook due to its powerful internal components. Natural saltine is soft to the touch and leaves no scuff marks. The Studio G7 was designed to pass Mil-Spec testing yet being both hefty and manageable. The performance of this laptop is unaffected by multiple short drops on hardwood floors.

Something seems off with the ventilation. In addition to the bottom fan vents, there is a single side vent adjacent to the lock slot and single USB-A port. This implies that under severe load, the Studio G7 can become quite hot to the touch, even when the fans are operating at full capacity. Some people may find it uncomfortable to use a laptop without a table after extended hours.

The SD card slot cover of the Studio G7 may be difficult to remove, particularly if you have short fingernails. A tiny DisplayPort 1.4, two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt, and a separate power port are located above this. Although many laptop manufacturers are transitioning to USB-C for charging, it's reassuring to know that port management does not need sacrifice.

The HP ZBook Studio G7 has a more impressive appearance. Expect finger movements that are fluid and finger presses that are haptic. There are just three lighting settings for the laptop's keyboard, which is insufficient. Additionally, the layout of the laptop's keys is limited to this number. Comparatively, our ZBook Create G7 configuration featured an Intel Core i9-10885H processor, a GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The previous HP ZBook 15 G6 configuration we tested contained an Intel Xeon E-2286M CPU, a Quadro RTX 3000 GPU, 64GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, whereas the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2) configuration we reviewed contained an Intel Xeon E-2276M CPU, a Quadro T2000 4GB GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

In comparison to its sibling, the Create G7, the Studio G7 produced more specialized output. The Studio G7 got 6,137 points in Geekbench 5.0, which measures general performance, compared to the Create G7's 8,003 points; this indicates that the Create had a more powerful CPU. The ZBook 15 G6 with a Xeon processor also outperformed the ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2), scoring 7,680 points to the ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2)'s 4,425 points.

When transferring 4.97 GB of files, the Studio G7 reached a maximum transfer rate of only 809 MB per second. This is significantly faster than the Create G7's 640 MBps, but significantly slower than the ZBook 15 G6's 1,272.3 MBps and ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2)'s 1,696.4 MBps.

This trend persisted in our Handbrake video editing benchmark, in which we measured the rate at which a machine can transcode a 4K video to FHD. This took the Studio G7 9:15 seconds, which was faster than the ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2)'s 12:02 seconds but slower than the Create G7's 7:21 seconds and the ZBook 15 G6's 7:21 seconds.

In PugetBench tests of Adobe's Creative Cloud Suite, the Studio typically lagged behind the ZBook 15 G6 and the ThinkPad P1 (Gen 2), but the Create was consistently the clear victor.

The Studio got 775 points in Photoshop, while the ZBook 15 G6 scored 792 and the ThinkPad scored 639. Create received 874 points. The Studio scored 460 points in Premiere, while the ZBook 15 G6 received 464 points, and the ThinkPad scored 332 points. Again, The Create surpassed them with 597 points.

When we switch to our unofficial SPECWorkstation 3 test results, however, the story changes (official benchmarks need to be submitted to SPEC, but these were not). Here we can see how the Create G7 and Studio G7 differ in their specializations. While Studio G7 still lagged behind in some tests, it excelled in others, including those involving specialist work programs. Blender scored 1.32 points on the Studio G7, while the ZBook Create G7 scored 1.58 points. Similar results were observed in the financial modeling software FSI, where the Studio G7 scored 1.29 points compared to the Create G7's 2.0 points.

When we examine GPU exams like Catia and Creo, which are both highly relevant to architectural fields, the tendency begins to invert. In Catia, the Studio G7 scored 2.09 points, which substantially surpassed the Create G7’s 1.06 points. Similarly, in Creo, the Studio G7 scored 1.65 points compared to 1.35 for the Create G7. When running Showcase, the Studio G7 scored 2.80 points, while the Create G7 scored 3.20 points.

The Studio G7 was also subjected to our standard Cinebench stress test, which mimics a lengthy period of high use by running Cinebench R23 20 times in a succession. Here, it achieved an average score of 4625.41. Throughout this time period, the average CPU clock speed was 2.26 GHz and the average CPU temperature was 61.14 degrees Celsius (142.05 degrees Fahrenheit).
