One surprise from this round of testing: You can fund your Google Pay account with PayPal!
As with all mobile payment apps, you must register a debit card to receive payments, but credit cards can be used to make payments. Google Pay does not allow you to pay acquaintances with a credit card, so there are no transaction costs. A debit card or bank account must be linked to your account. Other services, such as Venmo, let the use of a credit card for a fee of three percent. Note that paying with a credit card affords you liability protections, whereas paying with a bank account leaves the resolution of any disputes to the endpoint banking institutions.
Google Pay, unlike Apple Pay, only works if your phone is unlocked. However, like Apple Pay, PayPal, and Samsung Pay, you may set Google Pay to require biometric authentication. With Google Pay, simply unlock your phone and then hold it up to the point of sale, and your payment is processed without additional action (unless it's a significant purchase needing a signature). Apple Pay and Samsung Pay do not require a phone unlock, but a biometric login or PIN is required to make a transaction.
My experience with Google Pay at a nearby supermarket was as seamless as silk. According to the instructions, "just unlock your phone and hold it up to the terminal until a check mark appears." There is no need to even launch the app." It was simpler than paying with Apple Pay on a current iPhone, which requires holding the phone to your face and double-clicking the side button — a method that takes greater skill than Google Pay.
The previously distinct Google Pay Send app has been merged with the Google Pay app. This places it in the same category as Venmo, Square Cash, and PayPal. You can pay or request money via mobile device or online browser. You can also set up payment reminders for regular transactions. You may view all of your Google Pay transactions, both personal and business, on the same website.
You can transfer up to $10,000 in a single transaction, and you have a weekly limit of the same amount, albeit you can only make payments of up to $300 until your identity has been verified. This is more accommodating than Venmo and PayPal, both of which have $5,000 restrictions. Residents of Florida can only send up to $3,000 using Google, and transactions beyond $2,500 require a bank account to be linked to the recipient's Google Pay account.
You do not, however, get a social network similar to Venmo to see what your friends are paying for and who is paying. Neither can you pay people in different countries, as you can with Xoom; however, US and Indian residents can make person-to-person transfers. Google, unlike Venmo, allows you to use the service for small business purposes such as childcare, consulting, and rentals. If you take business payments, this tool enables you to enter tax information for your location.
The Home tab of the app displays a feed of deals, recent payments, and (if you're using an Android device) a list of nearby merchants that accept contactless payments. The iOS version is somewhat more efficient, with only three tabs in the layout, omitting the Send tab in favor of displaying profile circles of previously-sent-to contacts on the home screen.
