HP Chromebook x2 11 Review

The HP Chromebook x2 11 is very capable. This August 2021-released HP Chromebook joins other 2-in-1 portables with a detachable keyboard design that makes them feel more like tablets that can be transformed into laptops, similar to Apple's high-end iPads and Microsoft's Surface Pro. It is a brilliant approach to the hybrid laptop design, especially considering that most 2-in-1 laptops with non-removable keyboards are not particularly practical to use as tablets. The ChromeOS UI on a Chromebook is equally intuitive in tablet mode and laptop mode.

Starting at $569 in the United States, this 2-in-1 Chromebook is less costly than the Surface Pro 8 but pricier than the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5. This base model, which includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of eMMC storage, is unavailable in the United Kingdom and Australia.

At least in Australia, where it retails for $599 (AU$999), the tested variant is... This device is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c, 8 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of eMMC storage, which is more than adequate for daily productivity and media consumption. A higher-end model with double the storage appears to be offered for $679 in the United States and £550 in the United Kingdom.

If you're looking for the best value, the HP Chromebook x2 11 is a strong contender, as it has a better display resolution than both the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 and the HP Wireless Rechargeable USI Certified Pen.

This Chromebook's design highlights include a keyboard that is extremely satisfying and comfortable to write on. The tablet itself is narrow, lightweight, and fairly sturdy, with a luxurious matte back that resists fingerprints exceptionally well. There are also two USB-C connections, which may not seem like much, but for what you'll be using this Chromebook, it's more than sufficient.

The HP Chromebook x2 11's detachable design makes it incredibly versatile, and it can be used equally well in tablet and laptop modes. Unfortunately, the Chromebook's user-friendliness is somewhat compromised by the same features that make it flexible.

The kickstand, which is helpful in both tablet and laptop mode, is quite impressive by itself. However, the detachable keyboard case lacks stability. It is easily pliable and likes to flap about unless placed on a stable surface. Therefore, you cannot use this kit on your knee or a softer surface without difficulty. In fact, even when it's on a solid surface, even minor pressure can cause the trackpad to register incorrectly or even cause the entire device to collapse in your palms.

Because the kickstand and keyboard cover are distinct components, and because the keyboard cover is flimsy to begin with, the entire setup is cumbersome to prop open and store. To prop it up in laptop mode, you must force open the kickstand and prevent the keyboard cover from swaying. That is not what you would term seamless.

In laptop form, the power button is also somewhat inconvenient to use. You must press and keep it to access a menu with options for shutting down, logging out, and locking. A solitary press has no effect. It also functions flawlessly as a fingerprint scanner, which is its secondary function. Then there's the touchpad, which is not particularly precise but is the simplest to use.

The audio from the Bang & Olufsen speakers is, however, marginally compressed. The mids are slightly pushed back, making it difficult to understand the dialogue in films and television programs. The highs are adequate, being sufficiently sharp but not particularly detailed. And there's not much at the bottom. The HP Chromebook x2 11's speakers are slightly inferior to those of the iPad Air, which, despite being approximately the same size and thickness, produce a louder volume, more bass, and more mids.

Thankfully, the touchscreen monitor is superior. It has a natural resolution of 2,160 x 1,440, which, to be honest, is quite high for an 11-inch display. The Chromebook X2's display features 400 nits of brightness and 100 percent coverage of the sRGB color space, making it a pleasure to watch media on. The image clarity is crisp, spotless, and vivid. Even though HP hasn't specified the contrast ratio, the dynamic range appears to be quite broad. Even in dark, shadowy landscapes, you can discern a great deal of detail. It does a poor job of reducing reflections, so we would avoid using it in extremely bright environments.

The touch display on the HP Chromebook x2 11 works exceptionally well, particularly with the included HP Wireless Rechargeable USI Pen, which has its own magnetic dock for easy access and storage.

The 5MP camera is not the sharpest, but its low-light performance exceeds expectations. It can record ambient lighting for brighter video quality and does not compensate with excessive smoothing. Due to the microphone's ability to pick up a large deal of background noise, it is not ideal for video conferencing.

Obviously, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c chip contained within has demonstrated to be a speedy performer. The HP Chromebook x2 11 may not be a gaming or content production laptop, but it is a multitasking device. We can run 20 or more Google Chrome tabs, with five of them streaming new content such as The Eternals, Windfall, and The French Dispatch from different streaming services (Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube) without experiencing any lag.

The speed is significantly superior to the MediaTek SoCs found in the competing Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 and the original Lenovo Duet. In addition, the X2 11 I used had 8 GB of RAM, whereas the Duet and CM3 versions I evaluated only had 4 GB. The HP is unquestionably the finest of the three, as it is inherently smoother, faster, and more responsive than the other two.

I did not encounter any lag while performing basic productivity chores, which is what these tablets are designed for. Obviously, they are also excellent for entertainment, and you should have no trouble there. Even for Android apps, performance was satisfactory, and if you wish to engage in additional gaming, cloud gaming services such as Stadia, GeForce Now, and Xbox Game Pass are available. However, Wi-Fi 80.211ac lacks the future-proofing and faster rates of 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6).

Taking notes and drawing with the pen also works well, and may be the greatest experience I've had with a USI pen. The device has a 3:2 aspect ratio, so writing and drawing on it feels more like doing so on paper. I gave it to my 13-year-old daughter, who frequently uses an Apple Pencil of the second version with her iPad. Although the experience wasn't quite as fluid as with the Pencil, she reported that it was nearly lag-free most of the time, and she had no trouble sketching in the Concepts app that HP provides on the Chromebook x2 11. Google Cursive, a new web app intended for writing on Chromebooks, is also included. The application has shortcuts that make taking notes (and fixing errors) much simpler, and lag was minimal.

The HP battery life claim of up to 11 hours and 15 minutes was nearly matched by my findings, which reached 11 hours and 4 minutes on our streaming video test. As long as I kept the display's brightness at a reasonable level, I had no trouble working for hours while streaming music or video in the background. It charges rapidly through either of its USB-C connections, reaching 50% capacity in 45 minutes (though I do wish HP had split the two ports, putting one on each side for more flexible charging and attaching external devices like a monitor).

The HP Chromebook x2 11 does not provide 16 hours of battery life like the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook, but it still has a decent battery life. HP has rated the battery life at 11 hours, but we were able to squeeze a little more than 11 hours while looping local video at 1440p. That's still a full day of battery life per refill.
