HP Omen 16 Review
HP Omen 16 may kill that style. With its Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and Intel Core i7-12700H, the Omen can play games, but it looks like a suit. Elegant adult gameplay laptop. Some improvements are superficial. The camera, now more important than ever, is 720p, and the large touchpad is mushy. If you want a gaming Computer with many ports and a powerful design, the Omen 16 is a good choice. HP Omen 16 is a powerful gaming PC with plenty of expansion room. A mushy touchpad and a subpar webcam need refinement.
HP's Omen 16 architecture is airflow-based. It's not noticeable from afar. The black, plastic 16-inch Omen has a reflective diamond insignia. I preferred this laptop's simple style to red-and-black ones.
The top adds flare. Forgot your screen size? The palm rest has a small "16." Tone-on-tone makes it unobtrusive. Our review edition had per-key RGB, but the default is a four-zone keyboard.
A taller 16:10 screen could have eliminated the 16.1-inch monitor's lower bezel. The arrow keys, print screen, home, end, and page up/down keys are isolated from the QWERTY keys on the keyboard.
Airflow? HP put some laptop ports on the sides and others on the back. This allows sidewall and back exhaust. Unlike other gaming PCs, HP did not include these intake fans.
Left side USB Type-A, Ethernet, and 3.5 mm headphone input surround these fan inlets. Right side USB-A connections. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C on AMD models), an HDMI output, and a power jack are on the rear.
HP's rear ports are mostly logic. If you leave your laptop on a desk, HDMI and power may remain connected. HP should have moved the Ethernet link or swapped it for one of the two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The 5.29-pound Omen 16 is 14.54 x 9.76 x 0.39 inches. It weighs more than the 4.4-pound, 0.67-inch Razer Blade 15. Lenovo Legion 5i Pro 16-inch notebook weights 5.49 pounds and is 1.05 inches thick. The Alienware x15 R2 weights 5.18 pounds and is 0.52 inches thick, thinner than the Razer.
HP Omen 16 Review
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU (8GB GDDR6, 150W maximum graphics capacity, 1,050 GHz boost speed) and Intel Core i7-12700H processor powered the HP Omen 16. Control at 1440p with high settings and medium ray tracing at the laptop's native screen tested the Omen 16. During Oldest House battles against Hiss-controlled security agents, it averaged 40–55 frames per second.
At its highest Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark settings, the Omen got 90 frames per second at 1080p and 60 at its native resolution of 2560 x 1440. Razer Blade 15. The Legion 5i Pro led with 110 frames per second at 1080p and 69 at native resolution, while the Alienware x15 R2 trailed the Omen by a few frames at both settings. The Omen's laptop competitors all use the RTX 3070 Ti in our testing.
The Omen won the Grand Theft Auto V test (very high levels) with 104 frames per second at 1080p and 72 at 1440p. This is a significant advantage over the Blade 16 and Legion 5i Pro, which were near the center of the pack at 1080p, but at native resolution, where CPU speed is less essential, the difference was negligible.
The Omen managed 104 frames per second at 1080p and 72 at 1440p in Far Cry 6 (ultra levels). The Legion 5i Pro ranked second with 88 frames per second at 1080p and 70 at its original 2560 x 1600 resolution. 1080p had more differences than higher resolutions.
The Omen scored 66 FPS at Full HD and 45 at QHD on Red Dead Redemption 2's middle settings benchmark. The Legion beat the Omen with 81 frames per second at 1080p and 43 at 1600p, while the Alienware x14 R2 came within one frame. The Omen scored 79 fps at 1080p and 58 at 1440p on Borderlands 3's "badass" settings test, matching the Razer Blade 15. Alienware and Legion 5i Pro won 1080p (with the Legion taking the clear lead at 99 fps in 1080p and 57 fps in 1600p),
Metro Exodus stress-tests gaming PCs. 15 benchmarks simulate 30 minutes of gaming. The Omen consistently played the game at 1080p with the RTX preset at 64.45 FPS. The Core i7-speed 12700H's cores averaged 2.80 GHz and its efficiency cores 2.15 GHz. CPU temperature was 82.12 degrees Celsius. The 75.68-degree RTX 3070 Ti Processor ran at 1,121.88 GHz.
AMD Ryzen 7 5800H batteries consume almost infinitely. It consumes 160 V in seconds. 134 W lasts long. Both numbers exceed those of the MSI Alpha 15 with the same CPU.
No greater performance increase was observed. Although inefficient, the CPU can contend with an Intel Core i7-11800 or i7-12800H. Increased power consumption is not noticeable in our benchmarks. The Omen 16 is in the middle of most ratings, surrounded by the competitors. The Processor works at full capacity.
The lack of a Cinebench loop value drop, which prevents system overheating, is exceptional. HP Omen 16's maximum ventilation offsets speed drops. The rivalry proves the system's success. Considering measurement fluctuations, the Omen 16 is comparable to its competitors and usually near the top. Above-average image and video creation and editing. GeForce RTX 3060 models suffer.
HP OMEN 16 GPUs include the GTX 1650 and RTX 3070 Ti. GTX 1650, RTX 3050, 3050 Ti, and 3060 are best for 1080p gaming. The GTX 1650 can run 1080p at 60 fps with moderate settings. The RTX 3050 will get you closer to 60 FPS at 1080p with medium or high settings. The RTX 3050 Ti outperforms the 3050 by about 10%. The RTX 3060, however, is much faster than the 3050 and ideal for a 1080p 144Hz monitor. The 1440p 165Hz display suits the RTX 3070 and 3070 Ti. The 3070 Ti is 5–10% faster than the 3070.
Ray tracking and DLSS are not available on the GTX 1650. (Deep Learning Super Sampling). DLSS boosts frame rates by lowering game resolution. Ray tracing's high performance cost will reduce frame rate, so it's especially essential.
NVIDIA Optimus lets the HP OMEN 16 use the CPU's integrated graphics for lighter activities to save battery life. No MUX (multiplexer) switch means all data processed by the dedicated GPU is routed through the integrated GPU, resulting in a minor performance hit. HP does not list the TGP (total graphics power) of the RTX 30-series GPUs, but online reports say the RTX 3070 operates at 115W with Dynamic Boost, suggesting that the lower-end GPUs function at the top of their power ranges.
