HP Pavilion Aero 13 Review

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 ($839) is a great ultraportable laptop under $1,000. The HP Pavilion Aero 13 includes a cheap AMD Ryzen 7 processor, a bright 13.3-inch display, a clicky keyboard, and a superlight chassis. The undersized keyboard deck and lack of a microSD card connector may turn some off. The HP Pavilion Aero 13's greatness overshadows these drawbacks. Discover why it's a top laptop.

HP's website and third-party dealers sell the HP Pavilion Aero 13. (opens in a new tab). Our $839 evaluation device has an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U processor, 16GB RAM, a 512GB solid-state drive, and a 13.3-inch (1920 x 1200) display. White, warm gold, and soft rose gold are $10–$15 more than silver for this laptop.

For a cheaper choice, choose the $749 model with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600U processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB solid-state drive. A model with the same CPU and RAM as our review device but a 1TB SSD and 2560 x 1600 display costs $1,099 MSRP.

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 looks slim, but its feel is better. At 2.2 ounces, this gorgeous piece feels like a paperweight in my hands. It matches the HP logo-emblazoned aluminum hood. The keyboard deck has a glass touchpad, fingerprint reader, and slim design. The display's bezels were extremely tiny.

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 outperforms its competitors with 2.2 pounds and 11.7 x 8.2 x 0.7 inches. Despite being thinner than the Aero 13, the Asus Zenbook 13 OLED (2.5 pounds, 12 x 8 x 0.6 inches), Lenovo ThinkPad X13 (AMD) (2.8 pounds, 12.3 x 8.6 x 0.7 inches), and Dell XPS 13 OLED (2.8 pounds, 11.6 x 7.4 x 0.5 inches) are all heavier.

The lightweight HP Pavilion Aero 13 has a surprising number of ports. The power jack and one drop-jaw USB Type-A connector are on the right, while the HDMI port, one USB Type-C port, and a headphone jack are on the left. A microSD card slot would have been nice.

The HP Pavilion Aero 13's 13.3-inch, 1920 x 1200 display is bright and colorful for its price. When watching the Shang-Chi movie trailer, I was impressed by the Aero 13's evening contrast. Even at night, I could see the father's creases in Shawn's poignant scene with his father. Shawn was astonished by the water droplets' purity and brilliance in the room.

Our colorimeter shows the Aero 13 accurately reproduces 119.5% of the sRGB color space, making it more colorful than typical. We like 100% sRGB monitors. The Aero 13 outperformed the XPS 13 OLED and ThinkPad X13, which scored 117.3% and 102.1%. The Zenbook 13's OLED display can show 132% of sRGB. The Aero 13 is a great laptop for under $1,000 with 451 nits of brightness. It outshone the Zenbook 13 OLED (396 nits), XPS 13 OLED (417 nits), and ThinkPad X13 (509 nits) (278 nits). Who says only premium devices have bright displays?

The Aero 13's compact keyboard deck may take some getting used to, but it's one of the most comfortable I've used. My 10fastfingers.com typing test score of 48 was below my 53-word-per-minute average. However, the keys are responsive, well-spaced, and clicky. The short deck is your only challenge. It's fine if you're used to a 13-inch laptop. Downsize slowly. Touchpad is great. It's not the biggest touchpad, but it's smooth like glass. Deep clicks give you authority when selecting something.

The HP Pavilion Aero 13's bottom-firing Bang & Olufsen speakers aren't strong, but they're well-balanced. I only heard a few scratchy notes. Gayle's "abcdefu" opened with beautiful vocals and a great guitar, but they were too quiet and weak. The chorus didn't fill my workspace. Despite lacking bass, the speakers emphasized treble with percussion.

B&O audio control on the laptop improves sound quality but not performance. Audiophiles can experiment with music, movie, and voice presets and EQ. Our HP Pavilion Aero 13 review sample has an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U processor and 16GB of RAM. It ignored 36 Google Chrome tabs and three 1080p YouTube videos.

Given its price, the Aero 13 scored 5,876 on Geekbench 5.4 overall performance. XPS 13 OLED with Intel Core i7-1185G7 (5,420) and ThinkPad X13 with Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U (4,580) were outperformed (4,935). Zenbook 13's Ryzen 7 5700U processor outperformed the Aero 13's (6,411).

HandBrake benchmarked the Aero 13's 4K-to-1080p conversion time at 9 minutes and 5 seconds. This speed is faster than the XPS 13 OLED's (18:12) but slower than the ZenBook 13 OLED's sub-9-minute mark (8:22). To test file transfer performance, the Aero 13 copied 25GB of multimedia. The ZenBook 13 (873 MBps), Dell XPS 13 (742 MBps), and ThinkPad X13 (256GB SSD) have faster 512GB SSDs than our Aero 13's 503 MBps (747 MBps).

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 can game with its integrated AMD Radeon graphics processor. The Aero 13 plays games better than many ultraportables. In Sid Meier's Civilization VI: Gathering Storm (medium, 1080p), the Aero 13 averaged 39 FPS, making it playable and looking great. The ZenBook 13's integrated GPU generated 24 frames per second in the same benchmark, whereas the XPS 13 produced 22.

Our battery test, which involved constant Wi-Fi web browsing at 150 nits, lasted 10 hours and 27 minutes on the HP Pavilion Aero 13. While 10+ hours on a charge is impressive, the ZenBook 13's 15-hour endurance is unmatched. The Aero 13 outlasted the XPS 13 (8 hours) and ThinkPad X13 (10 hours) (7:53).

The Aero 13's 720p webcam is typical of laptop webcams. Lack of contrast blurred my face, made my green outfit look yellow, and washed away part of my skin. Spotted skin was unpleasant for a morning business meeting.

The Pavilion Aero 13 was impressively cool during our tests. After 15 minutes of video streaming, the underside reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit, below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The touchpad reached 79 degrees and the keyboard center 88 degrees. The 2 key reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit.

HP Support Assistant, for warranty, storage, power, and security settings, is one of several essential apps. HP Smart, HP Privacy Settings, HP System Event Utility, and HP Quick Drop provide wireless file and photo sharing. Unfortunately, Windows 10 includes bloatware like McAfee, Simple Solitaire, and WildTangent Games. HP Pavilion Aero 13 includes a one-year limited warranty.
