HP Envy x360 15 Review

HP Envy x360 15 Review

The HP Envy x360 15 leads 2-in-1 laptop performance with its powerful CPU and graphics, well-built construction, gorgeous display, long battery life, and low price. However, it is heavy and using it in tablet mode isn't the best 2-in-1 experience, but the benefits outweigh these limitations. We would not fault anyone who disagrees with us.

The HP Envy x360 15  is priced, performed, and specified between the HP Pavilion x360 and HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 laptops. The HP Envy x360 15 is a top 2-in-1 laptop, but not for everyone. The HP Envy x360 15 is well-built but unattractive. HP laptops have decent designs. The touchscreen display, though not 4K OLED, is great. The HP Envy x360 15 is bright enough for coffee shops and job sites with up to 400 nits. Tablet mode on the Envy x360 15 is awkward. The HP Envy x360 15  does not have a flippable screen like some hybrid laptops.

It will never forget what it is, and while Windows 10's tablet mode operated well, the laptop's weight and thickness when used as a tablet may deter some customers. The HP Envy x360 15 uses its powerful Zen 3 Ryzen CPU to win most of our 2-in-1 benchmark tests.

The Envy x360 15 with a Radeon GPU outperforms Intel Iris XE in some cases. The Envy x360 15 still won in competitive situations, and while its battery life isn't the best, it's still towards the top of the list, if not the podium. The HP Envy x360 15 is one of this year's best HP laptops, but its price-to-performance ratio makes it one of the best 2-in-1 laptop values.

The HP Envy x360 15 has Intel Tiger Lake and AMD Zen 3 mobile CPUs. On HP's website, you can choose from a variety of configuration options to better tailor the laptop to your needs, but the starting configuration for the AMD models—which only offer a 15.6-inch, full HD (1080p) WLED display with a maximum brightness of 250 nits—includes an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor with Radeon graphics, 8GB RAM, and 256GB PCIe SSD storage for $659.

The UK base model, priced at £850, features a larger 512GB PCIe SSD but a previous-generation AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor, which has lower multicore performance than the 5500U upgrade if you can afford it. Australia's base model features the same Ryzen 5 4500U processor as the UK's but has 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB and a 256GB PCIe SSD for AU$1,999. The system we tested costs $999 in the US but is unavailable in the UK or Australia. An Australian variation with equal specs but a Ryzen 7 4700U costs AU$2,499.

HP Envy x360 15 Review

The HP Envy x360 15 is a conservative business notebook for professionals. Still, the design is well-built, with an aluminum alloy chassis that makes it robust, if heavy, and a more attractive deeper metal tone than the HP Envy x360 15's Intel variations. The HP Envy x360 15 is bulkier than other 2-in-1s. It weighs 4.11 pounds (1.86 kilograms) and is 0.72 inches (18.28 millimeters) thick.

The HP Envy x360 15 tiny air intake grill on the bottom didn't heat up during our two-week testing period because it has integrated graphics. The downward-firing speakers are a typical complaint, although this case has other speakers.

The Envy x360 15's keyboard deck fits two top-firing speakers on either side, improving sound quality, but the speaker system is still built for a 2-in-1 laptop. A vacuum sweeper can drown out The Sword's "Used Future" in a living room while cleaning or video conferencing.

Although these two speakers strain the keyboard, 95% of the most commonly used keys are unaffected, making it comfortable to type on. To fit the smaller space, the Home, Page Up, and other keys must be moved to the side. The trackpad is average, but the keys are pleasant and have enough travel.

SD card, two USB Type-C, and HDMI out interfaces are provided. Unfortunately, no docked stylus. It might fit a 2-in-1 because the laptop is thick enough. Some online versions include an HP Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Pen with even the cheapest units, however our evaluation item did not. It's better than nothing, but you'll still have to find the stylus.

During our testing, the Ryzen 7 5500U performed well and scored high benchmarks. It outperforms more expensive 2-in-1s with an Intel Core i7-1165G7, such as the HP Spectre x360 15 and Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga, in multicore performance and pricing.

In Geekbench, PCMark 10, and other CPU single-core tests, the Envy x360 15 scored 300 to 400 points lower than the Spectre and ThinkBook 14s Yoga. AMD's Ryzen processors outscored Intel chips by 2,000 to 3,000 points in multi-core and integrated GPU performance.

The HP Envy x360 15's Radeon graphics also impressed us in simulated and real-world tests. We've played Valheim on a lower-spec device, but the Envy x360 15 won't run the top PC games natively. The Envy x360 15 rendered Fishy Cat and Classroom in half the time of the ThinkBook 14s Yoga in Blender benchmarks. Budget-conscious creatives should choose the Envy x360 15.

The HP Envy x360 15 had great battery life. We expected a long workday from its 51-watt-hour battery. In PCMark 10, it lasted just over 13 hours. The HP Spectre x360 takes 20 minutes longer and the ThinkBook 14s Yoga five hours longer.

HP Envy x360 15 Review

The ThinkBook 14s Yoga lasted 20 minutes longer in our HD movie test. Eight hours is plenty of time for a transatlantic flight, which are becoming more regular. The HP Envy x360 15 webcam captures decent images at 720p. Even the greatest computers struggle with shadows, highlights, and other image quality issues. If you want privacy, use the keyboard key that controls a genuine shutter over the webcam lens.

Bloatware fills the HP Envy x360 15. Hardware-specific bloatware like the AMD Radeon Software Center and Bang & Olufsen Audio Center dominates Windows 10 bloatware. HP Quick Drop and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics are also preinstalled, however their usefulness depends on your needs. The HP Enhanced Lighting app simulates a ring light when streaming or video chatting. It's OK, but you may not need it.
