HP Victus 15 Review

GeForce RTX 3050 Ti degrades. The Victus 15 is a budget option to the Omen series, but its $1200 price tag for an entry-level GPU that performs roughly identically to the two-year-old GTX 1660 Ti puts it on a tightrope. HP Victus gaming laptops are cheaper than Omen models. To be competitive, Victus devices have lesser specs and fewer configurable choices. Two models have been released: Laptops are 15.6-inch and 16.1-inch Victus 15 and 16.

Our Victus 15 has an Intel 12th generation Core i7-12700H processor, a GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card, a 144 Hz 1080p IPS display, and 8 GB of RAM for $1200 to $1300 USD retail. Our CPU and GPU configuration is the highest for this model, however many hundred dollars cheaper SKUs are available with the Core i7-12650H, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3050, or 60 Hz 1080p display.

The chassis' sharper lines and larger rear contrast with the Omen 15 or 16's simpler and squarer appearance. This laptop's design is simple and black, unlike other entry-level gaming laptops. The hinges are less stiff than the Omen series. The hinges are weak and the display creaks when adjusted. For a cheap system, the foundation twists little.

For business or gaming, the design is understated. Edgy red and black graphics were popular a few years ago. More mature. It's necessary, yet heavy. Left side of the Victus has a power adapter port, USB Type-A port, SD card slot, and 3.5 mm headphone jack. HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, USB Type-A, and USB Type-C ports are on the right side of the device.

The 15.6-inch display features a broad bezel and a huge V when the laptop is opened. The V-shaped primary speakers are below. HP Victus 15 weighs 5.06 pounds and measures 14.09 by 10.04 by 0.93 inches. The 14.19 x 10.67 x 1.06-inch Acer Nitro 5 weights 5.51 pounds. The 5.8-pound, 15.71 x 10.59 x 0.99-inch Asus TUF Gaming F17 with Intel CPUs from the prior model year costs the same. The HP Omen 15, which we tested with a GTX 1660 Ti GPU, is 14.1 by 9.4 by 0.9 inches and weighs 5.4 pounds.

The HP Victus 15 included an Intel Core i5-12450H processor and a 4GB GDDR6 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card. The Victus can play modern games with lower requirements at high settings despite its GTX graphics card. Most games require medium settings.

Control was smooth at 1080p with medium settings. From 42 fps to 30 fps with intensive action. DLSS, which reduces GPU workload, isn't available for GTX 1650s.

Grand Theft Auto V's benchmark at 1080p resolution gave the HP Victus 39 fps. The Acer Nitro 5, with an RTX 3050 Ti, ran the game at 61 fps, while the Asus TUF Gaming F17 ran it at 55. The HP Omen 15 (evaluated in 2020 and used for historical perspective) with its GTX 1660 Ti and Ryzen 7 4800H obtained 61 frames per second like the Nitro.

The HP Victus scored 54 frames per second in 1080p Far Cry New Dawn (intense settings) compared to the Asus TUF Gaming 17's 50. The Acer Nitro performed best at 79 fps.

The HP Victus had the lowest performance at 24 frames per second on the Red Dead Redemption 2 test (medium settings), indicating that you would need to adjust the game's settings to play. The Asus TUF Gaming 17 had 46 frames per second, beating the Acer Nitro's 39. 36 fps was the 2020 Omen.

The HP Victus again had the slowest Borderlands 3 benchmark (badass settings) at 26 frames per second. The HP Omen and Acer Nitro delivered 43 and 45 frames per second, while the Asus TUF Gaming 17 produced 36. Also decline this game.

The HP Victus GPU was too weak to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at high settings. At 54 frames per second, the game looked great at medium settings. Gaming laptops are stress-tested by running Metro Exodus 15 times on RTX settings, representing 30 minutes of gameplay. We couldn't use RTX and had to play on medium settings. The game ran at 45 FPS throughout.

The stress test averaged 3.8 GHz performance core CPU speeds and 3.0 GHz efficiency core CPU speeds. HWInfo identified thermal throttling during the test at 83.9 degrees Celsius (183.02 degrees Fahrenheit). The GPU averaged 1,487 MHz and 80.5 degrees Celsius (176.9 degrees Fahrenheit).

Our HP Victus 15 had a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 display with 144 Hz refresh rate. I first launched Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness on the Victus to see how the brilliant, colorful video performed. I've seen better 1080p visual quality. Despite the film's brightness, several whites and shimmering hues were overexposed.

America telling Strange her origin story was overexposed. The environment's light overexposed the backdrop and faces. Colors were dull, but blacks were fine. The keyboard and window lit my movie screen.

The display is great for 1080p gaming. Control looked great on medium settings without ray tracing. I enjoyed each dangling light fixture as Jesse exited the elevator in the dark. Playing games without reflections made the display's anti-glare function operate better than watching content.

HP Victus 15 displays 45% of the DCI-P3 color spectrum and 64% of the sRGB color gamut. Acer Nitro 5 and Asus TUF Gaming 17 scored similarly. Victus 15 was the dimmest at 235 nits. The Acer Nitro 5 and Asus TUF Gaming F17 featured the brightest displays at 314 and 286 nits, respectively.

HP Victus 15 keyboard was good. It aids typing with some feedback. My 10-finger typing speed was 65 WPM with 95.86% accuracy. I scored in my regular range despite adding a number pad and skewing the letter keys. The 4.9-by-3.1-inch touchpad was huge, but I wish it felt better. However, the touchpad is smooth and responsive.

UL's 3DMark uses Night Raid (more modest and ideal for laptops with integrated graphics) and Time Spy to test Windows PC graphics (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs).

We also run two tests from the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which emphasizes texturing and game-like image rendering. The 1440p Aztec Ruins and 1080p Car Chase OpenGL and hardware tessellation tests challenge graphics and compute shaders. FPS is better.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Rainbow Six Siege, and a sports racing simulation employ the 1080p built-in benchmarks from their respective games (Forza Motorsport 7). (F1 2021). We run each benchmark twice, using different image quality presets for Valhalla and Rainbow and testing F1 with and without Nvidia's DLSS anti-aliasing technology. The GTX 1650 cannot run F1 with DLSS on the Victus 15.

The GeForce GTX 1650 is Nvidia's entry-level mobile gaming GPU, although the RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti have taken over. Esports games like Rainbow Six Siege justify the Victus 15's 144Hz display and playable frame rates at low to medium picture quality settings. It's in our database's bottom three or four gaming laptops.
