HP Chromebook x360 14 Review

The Chromebook has solidified its position in the laptop market, catering to those who desire a low-cost device for browsing the internet, managing email, and using Google Docs—and little else. Chromebooks that can be converted into tablets are relatively new to the market. This year has seen the introduction of a variety of models, including premium options such as the $500 to $600 Acer Chromebook Spin 514. But if you believe that's too much for a Chrome OS convertible, consider the HP Chromebook x360 14a, a $330 hybrid with speedy performance and a reasonable price. A coarse display for its size, subpar speakers, and a clumsy touchpad limit its allure in comparison to the Acer and other high-end Chromebooks, but it is still worth a look in its price range.

The Chromebook x360 14a comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage and is encased in a sleek metallic silver finish. This is near the bottom of the barrel in terms of memory and storage, but it's adequate for the cloud-based duties that Chrome OS is designed for. Our assessment unit, model 14a-ca0022nr, functions as both a tablet and a laptop and utilizes an Intel Pentium Silver N5000, a quad-core low-cost CPU found in many inexpensive laptops.

This Pentium is not a proficient processor, but it outperforms its even cheaper Celeron relatives, which power the cheapest Chromebooks alongside low-end processors from companies such as MediaTek. The 1.1GHz processor provides remarkably quick performance for the HP x360 14a, but for only $30 more, you can purchase a model with a Pentium Silver N5030 processor. This is by no means the most powerful Chromebook available (there are models with Core i5 processors for not much more), but it easily handled my Chrome tabs and various applications, such as Twitter, Messenger, and Gmail. Zoom communications, which can slow down less powerful Chromebooks, were not a problem.

Moreover, the x360 14C accomplished this feat with minimal heat and almost no fan noise. After a day or so of testing, I was skeptical that this device had a fan because I was operating a fairly heavy load and hearing nothing. However, when I placed my ear very close to the foot of the deck, I could hear a constant whirring and the occasional whine.

Nonetheless, many Chromebooks with more powerful processors (such as Acer's Chromebook Spin 713) have continuously spinning fans. If you operate primarily in Chrome, as I do, you shouldn't require more powerful specifications, and you shouldn't have to worry about noisy fans during the day. If you're operating more intensive programs, a device like the Spin 713 will likely provide you with increased performance.

Likewise, the Chromebook's battery life was adequate, albeit unremarkable. I worked six hours and twenty-four minutes per day on average. This is roughly an hour less than what we observed with the Spin 713, and many budget Windows laptops have longer battery lives. And it was not a quick charger, recharging to only 55 percent after an hour of Chrome use.

Regardless of the processor configuration, you will utilize Google's Chrome OS and spend time with Gmail, Google Play, and YouTube. It satisfies the needs of casual Internet users, particularly those already familiar with Google's software infrastructure. You should be able to match the functionality of a low-cost Windows laptop with just a few installations, as the Google Play Store contains Android apps and extensions for many popular programs.

The Chromebook x360 14a weights 3.3 pounds, which is fairly standard for a 14-inch laptop but hefty if you intend to fold the keyboard back and use the device as a tablet. Comparatively, the Asus Detachable Chromebook CM3 weighs only about 1.12 pounds, but the essential word there is "detachable." A tablet lacking a keyboard will always weigh less than a larger laptop. The HP's 0.7-by-12.8-by-8.7-inch (HWD) chassis is typical for a 14-inch notebook when in use, but its rounded corners give it a more compact appearance.

The lid is designated with the typical Chrome logo as well as the HP logo in the center. Two silver hinges hold the keyboard and display together, allowing the keyboard and display to rotate back and forth with just enough resistance so that folding the device does not feel like you're going to break it in half. In general, the construction quality is superior.

In contrast, the screen is less dense. The resolution of the 14-inch IPS touch panel is limited to 1,366 by 768 pixels, resulting in a lackluster image when playing videos and viewing images. It is not helped by its modest 220 nit rating. Considering that this is a convertible laptop, the display is disappointing. The glossy, reflective surface makes it difficult to locate the optimal viewing angle on a 14-inch display with such a low resolution. You may be able to get away with a resolution of 1,366 by 768 on a Chromebook with an 11-inch display, but the coarseness of the image is evident at this size.

The chassis of the HP Chromebook x360 14a is sturdy, but its touchpad is unreliable and sluggish. During testing, it made navigation difficult at times, disrupting the system's otherwise seamless operation. The touch screen, on the other hand, is responsive and simple to use in both landscape and portrait modes.

The speakers located on either side of the keyboard are fairly powerful, but at higher volumes they cause chassis vibrations. The keyboard is the HP's saving grace, with oversized Control and Alt keys at the lower left and a row of browser and system command keys at the top.

The Chromebook x360 14a has a limited number of I/O interfaces, though some of them may come as a surprise. The right side of the device is adorned with USB Type-A and Type-C ports and volume control controls. On the left is a headphone socket, a microSD card reader, the power button, and an additional USB-C port. It is a pleasant surprise to discover multiple USB-C ports on a budget Chromebook, and they will likely be useful for charging other devices. Wi-Fi 5 (not 6) and Bluetooth 5 complete the connectivity features of the Chromebook.

The HP Chromebook x360 14a is a cheap 2-in-1 laptop that is betrayed primarily by its dim display and subpar touchpad. Still, it doesn't quite flourish as either a tablet or a laptop. If you're searching for a more capable convertible at a reasonable price, the Chromebook Spin 514 from Acer may be a superior option. Nevertheless, the HP is adequate for meeting the requirements of students and casual internet users with limited budgets.
