HP Envy 17 Review

This 17-inch general-purpose clamshell manages to be both attractive and unexceptional. It is neither particularly inexpensive, particularly quick, particularly light, nor particularly anything else. The HP Envy 17 is a stylish everyday workhorse laptop with a 17-inch display that gives it a little additional productivity for remote work or school. You pay extra for a discrete Nvidia GeForce MX330 graphics processor that you don't really need, which takes it out of the "good deal" category, but it's still a decent laptop for the price.

Since I no longer have to transport a laptop between home and the office, I've developed a strong preference for 17-inch variants. If you work or attend school remotely with a single laptop screen, opting for 17 inches can be of great assistance. Even if you can't precisely quantify the benefits — you can accommodate three more worksheet columns on the screen! — the slightly larger screen makes it feel significantly less crowded.

Prices for the Envy 17 range from approximately $1,000 to $1,800, depending on configuration, but it's not a plethora of options. All models include a quad-core Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor and Nvidia GeForce MX330 graphics; you can choose between the 1,920x1,080 pixel FHD or 3,840x2,160 pixel UHD displays (an additional $290), from 8GB to 32GB of memory (an additional $50 to increase to 12GB or 16GB and $220 to increase to 32GB from 16GB) or a variety of storage configurations beginning with 512GB SSD plus 32GB Opt

The $1,100 setup, which is the base configuration but with 16GB memory instead of 8GB, is the greatest value if you're going with the Envy; if your budget is so tight that you can only afford the 8GB and still want an HP, I suggest you consider the HP Laptop 17. It is less attractive and sluggish, but can be purchased for well under $1,000. You may also wish to consider alternatives, such as a Dell Inspiron 17 3000.

FHD is acceptable on a 17-inch screen. I adore 4K, but you don't need it on a 17-inch screen unless you want to fit more content on it, which is the primary reason to choose a 17-inch display over a 15-inch one. In other words, FHD, 4K, and all other resolutions display the same quantity of content on all screens; it's simply larger on larger screens because it's spread over a larger area. However, if you have vision problems, magnifying everything can be beneficial.

The configuration options for the Envy 17 in the United Kingdom differ from those in Australia; the closest option to our test configuration is the FHD touchscreen model for £1,150. It appears HP Australia does not believe in the Envy 17. In the end, it comes down to the fact that you're paying a premium for the Nvidia GeForce MX330 graphics processor, but it's not significantly quicker than the Intel chip's integrated Iris Plus graphics, and it's much slower than upgrading to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. The only area in which its 2GB of graphics memory may be useful is in giving lightweight but wildly popular games like Fortnite a slight boost.

While I would adore another USB-C port (or 12), one is fairly typical for laptops in this category. Other than that, it has an excellent selection of connectors, including HDMI, three USB-A ports, and an SD card slot. The touchpad and keyboard are quite comfortable, and there is a fingerprint sensor located between the right alt key and left arrow, which is a clever placement that prevents accidental keystrokes.

You can adjust the sound quality of the speakers using the B&O utility. The HP Optimized mode is dreadful. Webcam video appears fairly standard — noisy in low light and with hotspots on my face in adequate light, but nothing beyond Zoom's ability to process — and you should keep the built-in mic array's noise cancellation turned on. I found the 4K screen to be excessively reflective; acceptable for predominantly bright screens, typically with white backgrounds, but irritating for dark screens, such as when viewing moody films or television shows in dim lighting.

As a result of not attempting to be ultrathin or ultralight, the Envy is able to squeeze more performance out of the same processor than the LG Gram 17, but at the expense of battery life. However, it lasted a respectable 7,5 hours in our streaming video test. If you're considering a 17-inch display for your next laptop, you could do much worse than the HP Envy 17 and may need to do some research to find something better. But you will likely be satisfied if you quit looking right now.

HP installed a quad-core Intel Core i7-10510U processor in the HP ENVY 17. This processor has a clock speed range of 1.8 to 4.8 GHz. The HP ENVY 17 can readily handle fundamental computing tasks such as web browsing, document editing, and spreadsheet creation. This laptop, like its competitors such as the LG Gram 17, performs admirably when it comes to multimedia editing.

In addition, the HP ENVY 17 scored 188 points on the Cinebench R15 single-core processor evaluation. In addition, the laptop outperformed its rivals, such as the LG Gram, which scored 185; it also outperformed the Dell Inspiron 15, which scored 135.

In the multi-core processor evaluation, the HP ENVY 17 scored 580 points. It performed better than the LG Gram, which scored 529, but it lagged behind the Dell Inspiron 15, which scored 672. In conclusion, I give this laptop's processor performance an eight for its outstanding CPU performance.

The HP ENVY 17 includes 16 GB of DDR4 SDRAM. This laptop has two memory sockets; upgrading the memory is possible using one of the slots. Moreover, the RAM in this laptop is so potent that the HP ENVY 17 scarcely slows down or stutters when performing multiple tasks. This laptop allowed me to simultaneously stream a YouTube video and download a 1 GB media file while operating 23 Chrome browser tabs without lagging.

Moreover, there were no discernible delays or slowdowns during routine productivity activities. In a PC Mark 10 productivity evaluation, however, the HP ENVY 17 performed worse than its rivals. On this evaluation, the HP ENVY 17 scored 3524 points, surpassing the LG Gram's score of 2967 points. The Dell Inspiron scored 3581 points, while the Acer Aspire 7 scored 5128. For its outstanding multitasking capabilities, I can give the HP ENVY 17 a memory review score of eight.

HP Envy 17 Review
HP offers a 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD as storage for the HP ENVY 17. In addition to its storage options, the ENVY 17 includes a multi-format card reader. In a CrystalDiskMark test, the 256 GB SSD exhibited adequate read and write performance. With the solid-state drive, accessing files and folders on the HP ENVY 17 will be nearly instantaneous.

For additional storage performance information, the HP ENVY 17 recorded sequential read and write speeds of 1447 and 872 MBps, respectively. With this milestone, it surpassed the LG Gram 17 which recorded sequential read and write speeds of 454.9 and 422.4 MBps, respectively.
