HP Dragonfly Folio G3 Review

Few individuals in the world of business PCs wish to stand out or create waves. Because of this, HP's Dragonfly line has consistently impressed with its combination of innovative, high-quality, and mature machines. The Dragonfly Folio 2-in-1 is a tried-and-true design that functions like a conventional laptop until the screen is pulled forward, either past the keyboard or completely flat. There are no detachable pieces to break or loose. The newest member of the Folio family is the HP Dragonfly Folio G3, which features Intel processors and an enhanced design. This laptop creates a very favorable first impression, but is it a lasting impression?

The HP Dragonfly Folio G3 creates an outstanding initial impression. As soon as you remove the faux-leather-wrapped machine from its packaging, you can feel its sturdy construction. Its metal deck is rigid and has comfortable, rounded edges that will not dig into your fingertips or wrists. This computer's outer case is made of plastic leatherette, which contributes to its plush, inviting feel.

Even the 2-in-1 functionality, which could feel fragile or flimsy, has a gratifying feel. Strong magnets hold the screen in place for normal laptop use, and a firm draw advances it to one of two positions. The Dragonfly Folio G3 demonstrates a level of design and sophistication that I'm not sure I've seen in any other computer, let alone a business-oriented model.

I did not initially note the ports and vents carved into the sides of the ship. The first few times I attempted to insert the USB-C charger into the groove next to the port instead of the port itself, to the detriment of the machine. On the opposite side is a wireless charging pad and docking receptacle for the included pen, and there is a small SIM card tray with a click-in mechanism if you purchase a 5G-enabled model (but more on that later). It is minimalist, but not in the same way as Apple's MacBooks or Dell's XPS premium models. From its embossed HP logo to its dark metal finish, the entire design is sophisticated and fashionable, demonstrating an aura of maturity.

If I have any complaint about the Folio G3, it is that the entire device feels unwieldy in comparison to other laptops. It appears to be heavier and bulkier than it actually is due to its metal construction and dense plastic leather. It weighs just over three pounds, but the Surface Pro 9 is nearly half a pound lighter, and the business-oriented ThinkPad X13s Gen 1 weighs less than two and a half pounds. Clearly, the additional weight of the Dragonfly Folio is attributable to its sturdy-feeling screen mechanism and premium metal components.

Given that this device was created for mobile employees who need to make a great impression in meetings (whether they're on Teams or in the room), I didn't expect to find a large number of ports. Currently, there are two Thunderbolt 4-compatible USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headset connection on the left side. Both of these interfaces can be used to charge the device.

The HP Dragonfly Folio G3 comes standard with Intel Wi-Fi 6E, the most up-to-date wireless standard, for wireless connectivity. In addition, my assessment sample included an Intel 5G WWAN modem. Users can subscribe to a data plan using either the internal eSIM or a physical SIM inserted into the machine's small slot. I was unable to test the 5G connectivity, but the wireless was on par with what I would expect from a 2022 laptop.

HP Dragonfly Folio G3 Review

The Dragonfly Folio G3's keypad is merely outstanding. It has an almost mechanical precision, with each key producing a distinct and easy-to-feel click when struck correctly. If I must be away from my clunky desktop mechanical keyboard, this is the type of keyboard I enjoy using for long periods of time. Although the keyboard is backlit, it only has a few levels of luminosity. The complete function row contains a multitude of useful shortcut keys, including a mute button, a camera killswitch, an airplane mode toggle, and a user-programmable button denoted by three diamonds.

In the broad scheme of things, this touchpad is comparable to the keyboard. Its large glass surface allows for effortless finger movement, and palm detection was nearly flawless. The touchpad accurately interpreted gestures; it's the kind of touchpad every laptop needs. While there are no high-tech haptic actuators inside, this trackpad's click provides a positive response that is not too harsh. Goldilocks would be pleased.

If you prefer to take handwritten notes, the Dragonfly Folio comes with a pen. The stylus magnetically attaches and charges on the side of the Folio and features a magnetic docking tab that prevents it from falling off. Although it can shift in a purse, I found it to be quite stable. Due to a discernible tremor when drawing straight lines, this pen may not be favored by artists, but it performs admirably for annotation, doodling, and standard notetaking.

The display of the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 was the only feature that gave me pause. The 3:2 aspect ratio IPS display has excellent color reproduction and contrast. The resolution is optimal; at 1920 x 1280, there are no scaling anomalies and the text is legible. It's just that for this price, I would expect something exceptional.

Apple's 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature micro LED displays of the next generation with vivid colors and HDR-quality highlights. A number of Dell's computers feature OLED displays. Why does the luxurious Folio G3 have such a rudimentary display? (For what it's worth, HP claims that this Dragonfly model is available with an OLED display, but it's only available through special order, and the vast majority of models will arrive with this standard IPS LCD.)

The 8-megapixel webcam does a superior job of tailoring the Dragonfly to business situations. Although it's not the sharpest camera I've ever seen on a laptop, the wide field of view ensures that you will be well-exposed and visible whether you're seated to the side of the display or facing it directly. In addition, there is an auto-zoom function that will zoom in on your face or head-and-shoulders to keep you in the frame if you move. It is evident that by reducing an 8 MP image, there is very little loss in overall quality, so you will appear roughly the same. Even if you're across the room from the Dragonfly Folio, microphones can capture sound from a wide variety of positions.

A nearby infrared sensor that can detect whether or not someone is actively using the computer. I thought the Walk Away Lock setting was a little too aggressive in terms of the amount of time it takes to obscure the screen, but for those who work in an open office, it could be a useful feature. Despite the fact that HP could have skimped on the speakers, the Dragonfly Folio G3 produces impressive sound. I was particularly impressed by the midrange and the fact that spoken-word content remained clear and distortion-free until the volume was increased beyond 80%. This highlights the superb design parameters of the microphones, webcam, and speakers for Teams and Zoom meetings.

HP has kept the amount of added software to a minimum, retaining only applications for settings-less features. There is an application called "Easy Clean" that disables the computer's input devices for 2 minutes, allowing you to sanitize the screen, keyboard, and mouse without accidentally inputting data. There are additional settings in the myHP app that you may or may not find useful, such as auto-screen dimming and a privacy alert that uses the webcam. HP Auto Lock & Wakeup, the utility that controls the computer's infrared presence detection, is only accessible through the Settings app.

Perhaps the most aggressively included application is HP's Wolf Security Suite, which is so essential that it receives a sticker alongside Intel's on the palmrest of the laptop. This brand represents HP's system administration, antivirus, and tracking utilities. This may be advantageous for organizations that are already HP customers, but if your company uses a different laptop security software, each system may need to be reimaged. Wolf appears comparatively tranquil in comparison to other antivirus suites, displaying notifications infrequently and never pressuring the user to purchase a subscription.

With its Intel Core i7-1265U processor, the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 2-in-1 is typically cool and silent. Even though it only has two performance cores, they are sufficient for most duties. The i7-1265U is quick for a low-power CPU, but it is not the most impressive processor for a thin laptop. This is evident in the PCMark comparison between the Dragonfly Folio G3 and the performance-oriented business laptop from Dynabook, the Portege X40. However, the HP is adequate for most standard business requirements, so don't let the mediocre score fool you into thinking it's slow.

We use Cinebench R15 to determine how well all the cores in a laptop function together in a demanding 3D rendering test. The HP Dragonfly Folio G3 lagged slightly behind the competition. We are aware that the Dragonfly Folio G3 was designed to run cold and quietly, and when combined with its lower-power U-series processor, we can see why it scores significantly lower than a machine like the Dynabook Portege X40, which is performance-oriented and runs hot.

Given that this is a very slender business laptop, the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 2-in-1 does not offer exceptional graphics performance. It has the standard Intel Xeon graphics found on both more expensive and less expensive devices. Again, the difference we observe is attributable to HP's tuning for a cool, silent computer rather than significant processor differences.

In our continuous video test, the HP Dragonfly Folio G3's battery life lasted for 10 hours and five minutes. If you place a premium on battery life in a business laptop, the ARM-powered Surface Pro 9 outperformed the Dragonfly Folio G3, measuring in at nearly 16 hours in the same test. In addition, a business-oriented ARM ThinkPad had 2.7 hours more endurance than the HP. In this price range, it is evident that Windows on ARM should be considered if power and software compatibility are not issues for your organization.
