HP Omen 17 Review
HP has effectively marketed the Omen series as powerful gaming laptops with an attractive design and high-quality construction. However, the manufacturer's prices are also quite costly. The current price of the Omen 17 is greater than 2,000 euros (approximately $2,000). The HP Omen 17's efficacy in processor benchmarks is exceptional due to its selection of robust hardware components. The 2022 model of the gaming laptop is now equipped with an Intel Core i7-12700H processor from the most recent processor iteration, along with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1 TB NVMe SSD from Western Digital. The performance of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti in our second review sample is also excellent. Due to a defective graphics card, HP had to replace our initial evaluation unit. In general, the 17-inch HP Omen outperforms the powerful HP Omen 16 with identical hardware.
The HP Omen's housing is constructed from black plastic and black-painted metal. The only color that stands out is the Omen logo on the display cover. Otherwise, the design of the laptop has been kept simple. The exterior of the gaming notebook is composed of simple, unadorned lines. The design has not altered since last year. Even the otherwise commonplace large apertures for fans are obscured here. HP uses Swiss edges and other optical trickery to make the laptop appear significantly smaller than it actually is. In return, it appears to almost float above the surface.
When opened, a decent keyboard with RGB illumination that can be toggled is revealed. Above this is an intriguing triangle pattern that appears to serve no purpose. Otherwise, a large O17 sign draws our attention.The laptop is supported by wide rubber feet on the bottom.
The display's top and bottom are constructed of plastic. The upper surfaces of the notebook's keyboard and touchpad are made of metal.The fact that the palm rests remain cool even under a heavy burden is a plus. The screen can be extended up to 150 degrees with one hand, despite its size. Even when the laptop is shaken, HP has done an excellent job with the hinges because the screen position remains stable.
The connectivity on the HP gaming laptop is relatively standard for gaming laptops, but the SD card reader impressed us with its speed. All interfaces are located on the notebook's sides. However, when connecting a wired mouse or other hardware on the right side, care must be taken not to obstruct the ventilation port. On numerous laptops, the AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 reference card achieves significantly faster transmission rates. However, it is possible to operate with a read rate greater than 100 MB/s.

For wireless communication, the HP Omen 17 employs the MediaTek MT7921. This module supports Bluetooth 5.2 and WLAN 6. In combination with the Netgear Nighthawk AX12, the rates for data transmission are regrettably not as high as those of other laptops. In addition, rates above 880 MBit/s in both the receive and transmit directions are not terrible. The positioning of the WLAN module beneath the heatpipes between the cooler and the graphics processor may become problematic over time. It is even attached with an adhesive material, so it may become quite warm when in use. Long-term, this may also cause connection issues.
Even though the image quality of the built-in camera is sharp and contrast-rich in well-lit environments, the webcam is not suited for broadcasters. In darker rooms, it hardly stands a chance of delivering reasonably decent image quality.
The HP Omen 17 is relatively simple to open, and there are many modular components inside. There is a vacant NVMe SSD slot available. A heat spreader and thermal pad have already been installed. However, replacing the WLAN module may prove difficult. As previously mentioned, it is located underneath the heatpipes and is held in position by an adhesive pad.
While a 17-inch laptop has enough space for a full keyboard, HP has omitted the numeric keypad to make more room for the arrow keys and macro keys (P1 to P6) and to provide adequate spacing between the key blocks. The RGB-illuminated keyboard has a distinct key travel of over one millimeter and crisp feedback, making it very pleasant to use. Europeans, who are accustomed to the ISO configuration, may find the ANSI layout of the keyboard quite unfamiliar. On the other hand, gamers who mainly use mechanical keyboards should soon feel at home here.
The WASD keys, among others, can be visually emphasized using the four programmable RGB illumination zones. This is likely to delight the players. The illumination of the keyboard and the designation of the macro keys can be adjusted through the Omen Center. Both static and dynamic lighting configurations are available. It is also possible to adjust the color and luminance of the keyboard illumination to match the on-screen content. This results in an effect that resembles the Ambilight system in some ways. This feature is exclusive to Light Studio.
The clickpad responds to each input with an audible click. It is responsive and precise. Additionally, the size and placement of the clickpad are appealing. Full HD resolution and a brightness level of 302 cd/m2 place the HP Omen 17's IPS-grade display in the middle of the pack. The matte surface eliminates reflections that would otherwise interfere with the gaming experience. We calculated that the contrast ratio was only 892:1. At 0.36 cd/m2, the black value is relatively high.
No differences in display brightness are visible to the unaided eye. Only the camera can detect distinct haloes on the display, but only after a lengthy exposure. The screen's response times do not match our expectations for a gaming laptop. During rapid image transitions, demanding gamers are more likely to observe distinct sequences. However, competing gaming laptops perform poorly in this regard. In their 17-inch variants, both the Asus TUF Gaming and the Acer Nitro 5 use screens with substantially inferior refresh rates.
The HP Omen 17's displayable color space is only 87.46% sRGB, which is not exactly impressive. This may be adequate for games and office software, but artists may require more. The calibrated HP Omen 17 display exhibits a relatively tiny color deviation. Using the color profile in the info window, you can reduce color deviations considerably if you have the same configuration. The color deviation decreases from deltaE 6.41 to 1.93, which is below the threshold of perception.
Under direct sunlight, the display's illumination is a bit dim. With the proper viewing angle, however, it is still possible to use the laptop in direct sunlight. Regarding viewing angles, the screen of the gaming laptop is not particularly stable. At more acute viewing angles, there are no noticeable color deviations, but there are substantial changes in luminance.
The HP Omen 17's hardware is obviously designed for PC gaming. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and Intel Core i7 12700H provide excellent performance in this instance. Processor support is provided by 16 gigabytes of DDR5 working memory. Western Digital's 1 TB NVMe SSD is also substantial enough to store a few video games. The power management of the HP Omen 17 has been kept relatively simple but is also highly configurable. For the metrics of system performance, CPU performance, DPC latencies, and SSD performance, the profile Balanced was chosen. In performance mode, GPU performance and gaming were evaluated. For the volume and energy measurements, various modes of operation were also evaluated. In Balanced and Performance modes, the CPU boost power is 100 watts, while the GPU boost power is 135 watts. In balanced mode, the processor operates at a constant 45 watts, whereas in performance mode, it operates at 75 watts.
The Intel Core i7-12700H is a high-end processor from the current Alder Lake iteration. It features six performance cores and eight efficiency cores for a total of 20 threads. In performance mode, PL1's 75-watt output is significantly higher than the average 45-watt output. In testing consisting of 25 iterations of the Cinebench R15 benchmark, the log analysis reveals distinct differences between the performance profiles and battery mode. As long as Performance mode is enabled, the i7 can sustain four consecutive runs on Boost power before swiftly dropping to 75 watts of continuous output. Balanced mode permits a sustained output of 45 watts, whereas Performance mode achieves 490 additional points. In battery mode, PL1 and PL2 have significant limitations. Here, the processor has only 35 and 25 volts of available power.
The gaming laptop demonstrates its capabilities in system performance benchmarks due to its robust hardware. All subcategories of PCMark10 and CrossMark display impressive results. Despite the fact that the HP Omen 17 cannot position itself at the top of the comparison devices, all devices have extremely high performance values. This results in a laptop that is consistently responsive in routine use.
The WDC PC SN810 1TB is an exceptionally quick NVMe SSD. In the memory benchmarks, however, its performance lags considerably behind the leading models in our SSDs and HDDs benchmark table. In this instance, the SSDs of the comparison devices also perform better. On the other hand, the NVMe SSD in the HP Omen 17 has outstanding access times and transfer rates. Unfortunately, the NVMe SSD's data transfer rates continue to degrade after a certain amount of time under sustained load (without the SSD's sensors indicating overheating). A similar pattern was observed in the HP Omen 16.
